Electric vehicle charging points
In the first project of this scale outside of London, Brighton & Hove is installing 8 on-street electric vehicle charging points across the city. Four charging points have already been installed, with more following by the end of the year. It is the first project of this scale in the UK outside of London.
The first charging points are in Bartholomews in central Brighton and Ditchling Road, near The Level.
An electric vehicle registration scheme has been set up to trial the scheme with electric car users.
- The scheme is free for the first 25 applicants.
- The charging points are available to electric car users who live in the UK.
- Both the parking and the electricity used to charge up the cars will be free during the trial period.
The charging points provide a top-up charge only and so have a maximum permitted length of stay of three hours, which will be enforced. This is to allow the maximum number of electric vehicles to make use of the limited number of charging points throughout the day.
Brighton & Hove plan to install more charging points in the near future and their locations will be added as they become available.
Electric vehicle charging points have been partially funded from the European CIVITAS scheme.
The move is aimed at encouraging more people to drive electric cars and is part of the council's commitment to achieving a clean and energy efficient transport system.
