Walking to school,  19-23 October

Pedometer Challenge

Children from Brighton & Hove trekked nearly 5,000 miles during this year’s Walk to School week – the equivalent of walking from the city centre to Mount Everest!  And to celebrate the success, one lucky class will be getting the chance to scale their very own climbing wall!

Around 500 children, from 7 city schools, took part in the Schools Pedometer Challenge, to celebrate National Walk to School Week.  The event was organised by the Brighton & Hove School Sport Partnership and JourneyOn, the city council’s sustainable transport project.

The aim was to encourage the children to think about how they travel to school and to get them to use the JourneyOn website.  The website is a fantastic resource for the children to plot their route to school and to see how many steps they take. www.journeyon.co.uk

Children from seven schools took part – Goldstone Primary, St Bartholomews CE Primary, Westdene Primary, St Margarets CE Primary, Somerhill Junior, Fairlight Primary, Hertford Junior, all hoping to walk the most miles and win a prize for their class.
At the end of the week, Squid Class from Fairlight School emerged as the winners, walking a total of 446 miles to and from school.  Their prize is an afternoon visit from the Adventure Unlimited climbing wall to their school, due to take place on November 10.

Second and third places went to Westdene School and Goldstone Primary.

Councillor Vanessa Brown, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “Walk to School Week is healthy, sociable and fun, and a wonderful way for our young people to discover the many benefits of making more of their journeys on foot.

“We are delighted with the results from the seven schools taking part which I hope will result in many families changing the way they travel to and from school each day.”

Twalking - 18-22 May 2009
Walk to School week is a national scheme to encourage parents and children to walk to school.

In Brighton & Hove we worked with three local schools to celebrate national Walk to School Week using the theme ''walk and talk''.  We asked children to talk to parents and carers about their walk to school and children wrote stories which were be recorded in the classroom. Some stories were broadcast on the radio during Walk to School week (18-21 May). The three schools involved were Westdene, St Joseph''s and St Margaret''s.

Three artists visited the schools and children took part in storytelling workshops and recorded their stories on digital recorders. Snippets of the stories were broadcast on JuiceFM from 18 to 22 May along with live interviews with some of the children from Westdene School.

You can listen to some of the stories created by children by clicking on the link for each school.
