Walk to School Week - Schools Pedometer Challenge

Children from Brighton & Hove clocked up over 15,000 miles during this year’s Walk to School week - and won a fantastic prize for their school.  Nearly 2,000 children from 12 city schools, took part in the ‘Schools Pedometer Challenge’, organised by the Brighton & Hove School Sport Partnership, JourneyOn, the city council’s sustainable transport project and the council’s road safety team.

During National Walk to School Week (17 to 21 May) the youngsters used pedometers and a walking log to record how many steps they took while walking to and from the classroom.children from St Nicholas CE School, Portslade

Children from Aldrington Primary, Cottesmore Primary, St Mary Magdalen Primary, Whitehawk Primary, Hangleton Junior, Rudyard Kipling Primary, Patcham Junior, St Nicholas Primary, Balfour Primary, St Bartholomews CE Primary, Westdene Primary and Hertford Junior, all took part.

Five classes with the most steps have won an afternoon session on the Adventure Unlimited climbing wall which will visit their school.

The winners of the Climbing Wall are:

The aim of the Pedometer Challenge was to encourage children to think about how they travel to school and to get them to use our JourneyOn website.
