Why Walk?

Walking is good for you: Health professionals recommend doing 30 minutes of exercise at least five times per week. Walking is a great way of doing this as it can be built in to your daily routine, needs no specialist equipment and is available to everybody. Did you know walking for one mile burns very nearly as many calories as jogging one mile.

Walking is quick: If you're averagely fit, walking any distance up to 400 metres is faster than driving -- think of the time you'll save on finding a parking space!

Walking time is 'quality time': Consider how enjoyable walking is compared to the stesses of driving -- even over longer distances.  Walking is relaxing -- you'll arrive feeling much fresher.

Walking is great for the environment:  Walk for 25 minutes every day instead of driving, you'll save around 110kg of carbon dioxide emissions within a year.

Walking is good for your community:  By walking to your local shops you are supporting your local economy -- why not have look around the website and find out what is available to you locally.

Walking is free!

Did you know...?

Walking can:

  • Halve your risk of a stroke or heart attack
  • Burn the same calories as jogging
  • Improve your blood pressure
  • Lower your cholesterol
  • Improve your confidence
  • Help you feel less stressed
  • Help you lose weight
  • Reduce the risk of some Cancers
  • Help prevent Diabetes

Pedometers (or Step-o-meters) are small step counting gadgets that allow you to track just how many steps it takes to leave your house for work, get halfway down the street, and then remember to go back for those important papers you forgot.  They can also track how many steps it takes you to get to the chippy and back, which may then allow you to devour at least a handful of guilt-free chips.  All in all, a pedometer can help you keep track of just how well you're balancing your sedentary (NON-moving) time with your active (moving) time.
