Bikeability
When we ask children how they'd like to get to school, one of the most popular answers is cycling. As a parent or carer this may cause some anxiety if you don't cycle, but we aim to alleviate some of these anxieties by offering children cycle training.
Bikeability is a national on-road cycle training scheme aimed at children aged 9-13 years. The council offers this training to all schools in the city, alongside park courses which operate during the school holiday periods. All bikeability trainers undertake a CRB check, Child protection check and road safety training. Have you considered cycling with your child or with other family members? There are some useful links at the bottom of the page that might help.
Use our Find my School tool to discover if bikeability training has been arranged at your school.
Bike-It
Bike-It aims to get more young people cycling to school and for other journeys. The council works in partnership with Sustrans, a national charity, to provide the Bike-It initiative at 16 schools in Brighton & Hove. Sustrans has a Bike-It officer who works with the council intensively with a number of schools to promote cycling using a range of exciting projects at each school. To contact the Bike-It officer please email Ben.Sherratt@sustrans.org.uk or telephone 01273 293761. Also please check out Bike-It Ben's Sustrans page.
Use our Find my School tool for Bike It availability at your school.
Child pedestrian training
An excellent training scheme is being offered to teach basic road safety skills to children aged five to eight in their immediate school area. Schools can be provided with this on request. All the trainers undertake a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) and child protection check, as well as road safety training. Schools and nursery schools can also borrow a special road safety resource pack which can be used at their school. If your school would like to be involved with this scheme please contact the Child Pedestrian Training Scheme Co-ordinator on 01273 292335.
Use our Find my School tool to find the availability of pedestrian training at your school.
School crossing patrol
Come rain or shine, school crossing patrols are there to help you and your children cross the road safely on the journey to and from school. They have been around for over 60 years and there are 18 operating at different sites across Brighton & Hove. If you are interested in becoming a school crossing patrol officer we'd like to hear from you - please contact the School Crossing Patrol manager on 01273 293847.
